Custom Shop Luthier

Job Summary

A luthier is a craftsperson who makes and repairs stringed instruments. A guitar luthier has studied and or trained in the art of guitar construction and repair.

 Essential Functions

Main duties

• Proficient in guitar manufacturing construction of guitars (rough mill, whitewood, color prep, buffing, finishing, and final assembly) to assist production as needed
• Assist product development team and engineering, in the launch process of new product
• Support and assist repair department in highly skilled repairs of guitars
• Problem solving of quality defects, to help identify root cause
• Assist in training of team members to advance knowledge and further develop skillsets of guitar manufacturing process (rough mill, whitewood, color prep, buffing, finishing, and final assembly)
• Working knowledge of historically correct product characteristics and Gibson platform of guitars
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

• Practical hands on work with band-saw, table saw, jointer, planer, some CNC, sanders, HPLP sprayers, buffing wheels, soldering, and basic assembly tools
• Ability to read blue prints, define product characteristics, trouble-shoot, problem solving, and work cross-functionally within the broader team
• Effective time management skillset with the ability to prioritize

 Required Education and Experience

• Certification or equivalent degree from accredited guitars school or related work experience

Essential Knowledge

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Project management skills combined with ability to work as part of a team

Travel Requirements

• This position is mostly office based, but may involve irregular travel

 Physical Demands

• Must be able to stand all day and lift guitars throughout the day.
