The Gibson Sound Lab Mixed Signal Electronics Engineer is responsible for the design and development of audio electronics systems for all brands within Gibson Brands. This includes professional and consumer audio products, musical instrument effects and amplifiers.
This role is a key position within the multi-disciplinary Gibson Sound Lab R&D team responsible for the design and development of all Gibson audio products and will play an important role in helping to develop systems within our current markets and into adjacent market segments as well.
Essential Functions
- Design, develop, and verify digital and analog circuits, mixed-signal design, logic, subsystems, and firmware to advance the state of the art in Gibson products spanning consumer electronics and Pro Audio categories.
- Research use of and develop with new materials, processes, and technologies
- Break new ground in creating solutions and IP to deliver competitive advantage and differentiation into products.
- Perform system design and architecture specification, exercising good judgment in combining off-the-shelf components with your own designs and implementations to achieve project goals. Make wise trade-offs between cost, performance, and development time to meet product and business requirements.
- Collaborate effectively within a dynamic team of top-caliber, multi-disciplinary engineers, and technologists to tackle ambitious goals and achieve high-quality results.
- Seek out and recommend new/alternative technologies, vendors, and components. Combine disparate technologies and synthesize solutions to help keep Gibson products at the leading edge.
- Help to maintain a highly functioning and effective “laboratory-style” environment for R&D work.
- Work with regulatory agencies to make sure our products meet the appropriate standards for different countries around the world.
- Ability to lead project teams and mentor other engineers.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of analog and digital electronics theory, preferable within audio systems
- Thorough knowledge of Electronics Design platforms, preferably Altium Designer
- Proficient soldering with the ability to rework SMD IC’s and components
- Proficient use of electronics test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, component testers, function generators, power supplies, logic and audio analyzers, etc.
- Ability to organize and work on multiple projects simultaneously
- Willingness to learn from mentors and senior staff
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in electrical engineering experience, applied physics, computer engineering, or related field or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum 10 years of hands-on experience designing and delivering leading-edge mixed signal electronics products, and/or subsystems within such products.
- Strong passion for audio systems and technologies, with at least 5 years of hands-on design experience in high-performance audio.
- Strong proficiency with mathematics and physical laws governing electronics and electro-mechanical systems.
- Working knowledge of computer programming (C, C++, assembly, others), and a strong understanding of microprocessor fundamentals.
- Desire to take on challenges and solve problems where the answers are far from obvious.
- Self-driven, able to direct own efforts and achieve results with minimal supervision.
- Excellent communicator and team player.
