These are highly specialized runs that incorporate not only harmonized runs, but the shifting into higher positions that take the harmony to higher places. It’s important to understand these kinds of runs so you can experiment with others and find some new places to create new and interesting harmonies.
One great way to try to find new harmony runs is to actually alter the chord changes. This is crucial, because after all, we need to play these in songs where the changes can sometimes take you by surprise, requiring new shapes and positions. Quite frankly, many Allman Brothers solos sometimes tend to ignore the chord changes, and simply create harmonies for harmonies’ sake!
In this case, we will really try to stay with some new changes and I’ll be sure to point out the new shapes and chords as we go along. Enjoy!—Arlen Roth
