Since emerging from the close-knit punk scene of California's East Bay in the early 1990s, Green Day have evolved into one of the most popular and creatively ambitious rock 'n' roll bands of all time. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong-drawing on the buzz-saw guitar of the Ramones and Hsker D, and the raw poetics of the Replacements' Paul Westerberg-has evolved over the years into a fiercely distinctive guitarist and songwriter. Combining melodic chord voicing with a blistering, jackhammer rhythm, Armstrong's playing deftly underscores the mood and theme of his songs. Buoyed by one of rock's truly great rhythm sections-bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tr Cool-Armstrong has proven just how much can be accomplished with one guitar, bass, and drums. From the 1994 breakthrough hit "Longview" to the staggering Who-like sprawl of 2004's amazing American Idiot, Green Day have honored the traditions of their influences while taking stripped-down rock 'n' roll to dizzying creative heights.
